ANNOUNCER:
Unhealthy pools are more common than you may think. A 2008 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, for example, SHOWED more than 10 percent of pools exhibited improper disinfectent levels. Doctor CHRIS WIANT, chair of the water quality and health council explains why proper pool chemistry is so important.
DR. CHRIS WIANT:
“New research by CDC shows that swimmer’s ear accounts for 2-point-4 million doctor visits and nearly 500 million dollars in health care costs annually. Pools with the appropriate ph and chlorine levels, however, are less likely to harbor germs that cause swimmer’s ear and other recreational illnesses, such as diarrhea. That’s why we are encouraging all swimmers to dip a color coded test strip into the water before they dive in to make that ph and chlorine readings are at appropriate levels.”
