ANNOUNCER:
A PETITION BEFORE THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION SEEKS APPROVAL FOR HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP TO BE CALLED “CORN SUGAR.”
CONSUMER CONFUSION ABOUNDS ABOUT THIS NATURAL INGREDIENT, PRIMARILY DUE TO ITS NAME.
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS NOT HIGH IN FRUCTOSE, RELATIVE TO TABLE SUGAR, AND THE AMERICAN DIETETIC ASSOCATION SAYS THEY ARE NUTRITIONALLY EQUIVALENT.
JERRY MOHR OF THE IOWA CORN GROWERS ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS EXPLAINS FURTHER.
JERRY MOHR:
“As a fourth generation farmer, I am concerned about the attacks on high fructose corn syrup. Corn sugar is a more accurate name for high fructose corn syrup and would help put a stop to the confusion about a product that is worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Iowa’s economy. I encourage all Iowans to contact their Representatives in Congress and tell them that the FDA should approve the corn sugar petition.”
