October 20, 2010 – A teenage girl was fired from her job after posting inappropriate comments about customers on Facebook. Two female employees claimed they were subjected to sexual harassment by their employer on social networks. A family in Arizona had their home burglarized after they twittered their vacation plans. And a rash of student-teacher sexual relationships has spawned crackdowns on social-networking friendships. These are real life cases of people who found out the hard way that what you say and post online can be used against you.
According to a new survey from Lawyers.com, half of Americans who use social networking sites (50%) report that they’ve seen people divulge too much personal information online – from cell phone numbers to home address – and four in ten (44%) are concerned that the private information they share online is being used against them.
So what do you do when social networking turns into social disaster? Renowned attorney, Gloria Allred discusses the risks of certain online behaviors, your rights and legal recourse, as well as ways to protect yourself and your family online. Gloria will also reveal additional survey findings of American’s social networking activity and privacy fears related to online engagement, and address:
- What to do if you get fired as a result of unwitting posts on Facebook or Twitter
- Whether incriminating evidence posted online can be used against you in the court of law
- What sort of information not to post on social networks
