United States Mint Launches Rutherford B Hayes Presidential $1 Coin Honoring 19th President

ANNOUNCER:
IN A CEREMONY IN FREMONT, OHIO, THE UNITED STATES MINT INTRODUCED THE RUTHERFORD B. HAYES PRESIDENTIAL ONE-DOLLAR COIN, THE THIRD OF FOUR COINS TO BE RELEASED THIS YEAR IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ONE DOLLAR COIN PROGRAM. THE NINETEENTH COIN IN THE SERIES HONORS OUR NATION’S NINETEENTH PRESIDENT. IT FEATURES THE IMAGE OF HAYES AND THE DATES HE SERVED AS OUR PRESIDENT, 1877 TO 1881. JANA PREWITT IS SPOKESPERSON FOR THE UNITED STATES MINT.

“Rutherford Hayes was wounded four times in the Civil War, served three terms as Ohio governor and two terms in Congress. As the Republican candidate for President he was elected by one vote in the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote. He served only one term as President and then retired to his home in Spiegel Grove where he continued to work for veterans, prison reform and universal education.”
