New Study Shows Smokers Are Misinformed About Certain Methods for Quitting

FINDINGS FROM A STUDY IN THE JOURNAL ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS INDICATE THAT SMOKERS ARE MISINFORMED ABOUT THE SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY, AN EFFECTIVE SMOKING CESSATION TREATMENT AND DESPITE DOUBLING A SMOKER’S CHANCE OF QUITTING, CESSATION AIDS ARE STILL INFREQUENTLY USED.  HOWEVER, MOST SMOKERS SAY THEY WOULD BE MORE LIKELY TO TRY NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY IF THEY HAD EVIDENCE ABOUT ITS SAFETY. HERE IS RESEARCHER JANE ALLEN OF LEGACY, A NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH ORGANIZATION. 

JANE ALLEN:

“Smokers who want to quit are much more likely to succeed if they use nicotine replacement therapy, but few do so.   This study suggests, that if the public health community can communicate better with smokers about the safety of nicotine replacement therapy, we may be able to increase nicotine replacement therapy use and, as a result, the number of people who successfully quit smoking.”
