As children and teens increasingly live their lives online AND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA real-life problems such as bullying are also tagging along. A NATIONAL SURVEY FROM LIBERTY MUTUAL’S RESPONSIBILITY PROJECT REVEALS THAT 77 PERCENT OF SOCIAL MEDIA USERS FEEL IT’S A PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO RESOLVE the situation if their child is a victim of cyberbullying. WITH SUMMER APPROACHING, KIDS have MORE TIME TO SPEND ONLINE AND DOCTOR JANET TAYLOR, A PARENTING AND RELATIONSHIP EXPERT ENCOURAGES PARENTS TO TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT RESPONSIBLE ONLINE BEHAVIOR.
DR. JANET TAYLOR:
“Parents are the first line of defense against cyberbullying and summer break provides an opportunity for this role to be strengthened. Here are some tips: Create screen-free family time by turning off the television and computer. Talk with your kids openly about online social media values and rules of the house. Find time to check-in and listen and if your child is being cyberbullied, ask how you can help before jumping in to fix the situation.”
