From Tweens To Co-Eds: What Kids Need To Know About Money

August 18, 2010 - While kids are heading back to school, there’s some information they just won’t get in the classroom like important money lessons that will help them later on in life.

Ellie Kay, America’s Family Financial Expert, says there are ways to raise financially responsible children. And that it’s never too early to start.

Ellie Kay, an author and mother of seven who is known for her upbeat, spot-on family financial advice, shares tips on the financial lessons you can teach your kids at every stage of life.

  • Youngsters: Tips for teaching little kids scenarios where they can begin to understand and recognize the value of money.
  • Pre-teens: Tips on guiding kids, who probably now earn allowance, on everything they should do with money – from spending to saving to giving it away.
  • Teens: Getting kids in the mindset of paying for, or contributing to, big ticket items and their entertainment when they go out with friends, as well as setting limits.
  • College-bound: Setting kids on the track toward personal money management and teaching the pitfalls of credit

Ellie will also have some interesting new survey results to share that gauges parents and their kids attitudes toward shopping for back to school and how that experience can be an opportunity to teach financial control.

Author, speaker, corporate educator, and mother of seven, Ellie Kay has walked her own financial talk – she knows what it's like to be strapped for cash and how to best control spending and plan for the future. Within two and a half years, she went from being a new wife and stepmom to two children with $40,000 in consumer debt to being completely debt free-all on one military income. She is a best-selling author with 12 books to her credit, including her latest title, Living Rich for Less(Waterbook/Random House, January 2009). She has been featured on shows such as Fox News, Your World with Neil Cavuto, CNN, and CNBC’s Power Lunch. Additionally, she has written for publications such as Women’s World Magazine and has been featured on radio shows across the country.
