Haitian Relief Tax Deductible Contributions for 2009

ANNOUNCER:
HAITI IS STILL IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE FOLLOWING THE JANUARY 12 EARTHQUAKE. THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION SAYS YOU HAVE ONLY A FEW DAYS TO MAKE A CHARITABLE DONATION THAT CAN BE CLAIMED ON YOUR 2009 INCOME TAX RETURN. CHARLIE EGERTON IS CHAIR-ELECT OF THE A-B-A TAX SECTION.
CHARLIE EGERTON, CHAIR-ELECT, AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION TAX SECTION:
“If you donate to a qualified charitable organization doing relief work in Haiti before midnight February 28, you may be eligible to claim the donation on your tax return this year. Otherwise, you can claim the contribution to Haiti earthquake relief efforts on your 2010 return. In either case, you’ll need to itemize your deductions and keep a record. You should note that contributions of property don’t apply, and gifts to specific individuals or to foreign organizations are not eligible.”
